Filmmakers, cinephiles and culIbadantural enthusiasts to gather at University of Ibadan for an evening of cinema, conversation and conviviality

IBADAN — The vibrant film culture of Ibadan is set for another gathering as the Ibadan Film Circle (IFC) invites filmmakers, film lovers, academics, creatives and cultural enthusiasts to a special Fireside Film Screening and Soirée on Saturday, August 15, 2026.

The event, scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. WAT, will take place at the Senior Staff Club, University of Ibadan, bringing together members of the city's creative community for an evening centred on film, ideas, conversation and social interaction.

Conceived as more than a conventional film screening, the Fireside Film Screening and Soirée seeks to recreate the intimate atmosphere of a traditional fireside gathering—where stories are watched, shared, debated and remembered.

For a city with Ibadan's long-standing contribution to Nigeria's intellectual, theatrical and cinematic heritage, the gathering provides an opportunity to strengthen the culture of film appreciation and critical engagement while creating space for practitioners and audiences to connect.

The IFC event also comes at a time when film circles, screening communities and independent cultural platforms are playing an increasingly important role in expanding conversations around African cinema beyond commercial releases and mainstream exhibition spaces.

From filmmakers and actors to writers, academics, students and passionate cinephiles, the evening is expected to attract a diverse audience united by a common interest in the moving image and the stories it tells.

An Evening of Film and Community

At its heart, the Fireside Film Screening and Soirée is about bringing people together around cinema.

The relaxed soirée format is designed to encourage interaction and informal exchanges, allowing participants to engage not only with the films being presented but also with one another.

For Ibadan's creative community, it promises an evening where cinema meets conversation, culture meets community, and storytelling becomes a shared experience.
